Tonight I mourn the loss of a great, great singer - certainly one of the greatest voices of our time - Luther Vandross.

I had the ridiculous good fortune of working with Luther as an assistant engineer on his CD, Any Love. It was a truly unforgettable experience - Luther in an awesome studio doing vocals - he sang to a very stark track of drums, bass, and keyboards turned down very low with his voice up above everything. I would have to bury my face in my notes or sit behind some high rack of equipment - just me and the engineer and Luther with the lights turned way down - I'd have to not look sometimes because his voice was so powerful that it would make me cry. He didn't even have to be singing about something sad, his voice through those gigantic, perfectly tuned speakers was unreal.

I will always remember Luther for his generosity and his sly sense of humor - he was REALLY funny. He'd been disabled for a couple of years due to a stroke, one thing is for sure - he's free tonight.
