I can see it in my mind - your 2 dogs discussing weather or not they ought to rope you up the 4th class section.
People are amazing. Truly amazing.
I always got into the exact opposite problem in the backcountry. I'd be on a trail with my dogs, and they'd head off on a little trail. "Sure," I'd think. "Why not?" Pretty soon, I was bushwhacking, getting smacked in the face with trees and branches, getting rimmed up on trails that clearly needed 4-wheel drive and a very low center of gravity (which the canines came equipped with. I did not). Urgh. I can't even count the number of times I followed my dogs and got myself into pretty awful situations that required me to lower pack by rope, and negotiate with God because I was sure I was going to die as I held on to the steep face of a mountain, trying to figure exactly what was the best way to climb/drop (fall?) another 20-30 feet.
Meanwhile, my sweet little furry girls were down below, barely panting, wagging their tails, as if to say "what's holding you up? C'mom! Let's go!"
Every time, I swore I'd never let them take me off course again. Uh-huh. Til the next time.
Of course, all those little trails were nothing more than game trails. That's why the beagle took those specific detours. But good gosh, you think I was (am?) smart enough to realize that I can't hop down a bunny trail too?

I remember climbing a ridge (called the Kelso Ridge) that had a 4th class section - meaning that it requred hands and feet to keep from falling or serious injury. On my down climb of the ridge, when I reached that 4th class section I was unable to go down because a man and women were trying to get their dog up that section. The dog was to scared to go up. Then they said "well let's see if we can rope him up". I couldn't take it any more and I went down another way to get away from it. I notice that people just love to brag about how thier dog climbed this or that. Another time I saw a trail of blood spots for a mile in the snow up another peak - and it turned out to be from a dog.

Whew! I'm exhausted! Getting in here was a lot of work!
I found this article interesting. Dogs and climbing. Hmmm...I'm thinking that Zamboni is ready to summit Rainier any day now. What's that you say? She may be a smidge old at almost 14 years old? Never! Besides, she's not climbing Everest!
:)

Hi Rose,
I had the same problems just a few days ago - and it took a bit of time to figure it out. So I wonder if the others have made it back in or not.
No, I do not know about the DB movie.
If you have time read the link below that magoo supplied - about Messner - its very interesting

Whew! I thought I had lost you guys. I just tried to log in and was denied. But I persisted and voila! I got here okay. When did this changeover take place. I didn't think it was that long since I signed in.
Anyway, it's great to see y'all here. Sorry if I missed it but does anyone know anything about the movie that David Breashears is supposed to be doing on Everest '96?
Best regards,
Rose

I'm about to jump into this Reinhold Messner article on vanityfair.com
This must have been in the issue when I let my subscription lapse (first time in 20 years).
