Well - you're probably right, Bruce.

Friday, May 13, 2005

Hey Bruce -

Great to see your penchant for the irreverent remains unchecked and glad to see you are a subscriber to the world of kayaking. I've yet to get mine down from its slings in the garage but the gnawing need to "slip-away" is beginning to overpower the list of other things that will always be in the way, if I let them. I'm also a neophyte to the world of home-brew, but my significant other got me a kit so looks like I'm going to get "hopping". We toy with the idea of an Alberta trip but pinning down summer work and dates are in conflict right now. Writing....you're right. I have let it lull too long, but more on that later. Keep the faith all.

congrats to EV, his patience has paid off.

I'm not sure if his reputation has moved forward though, since 1996, when JK framed his absence as a guide as a contributing factor to the disaster(s).

I think his "quest" brought out the critics, who could cite a lack of publicity for the (non-American) climbers who followed Mr. Messner's tour de force--most of whom were a notch above Mr Viesturs in technical ability and daring.

There are certainly two sides to this story. One important point is that EV is alive. But another is that if EV's background were similar to Anatoli Boukreev's, he would have struggled to gain attention as a professional climber. Would he have played it "safe" in those circumstances? Or would he have pushed himself to make a mark in the climbing world thru new routes, speed records, winter ascents, etc.

In essence, this constitutes a personal accomplishment and only a footnote in the book of alpine ascents. Yet why should he be held to another standard besides the pursuit of his own goals?

Bbob - Book? That's the funny part.

EV released a book two years back called "Himalayan Quest. Ev Viesturs On The 8000 Metre Giants". It always seemed to me that it was a bit strange, seeing that he had a couple of summits in dispute/not complete at the time. I think it was more of a contractual agreement with a publisher.

Watch for the new release "NOW WITH NEVER BEFORE SEEN FOOTAGE!"

Regardless, of thebehind the scenes business - it is an accomplishment.

Thanks Carrie - I will check it out.

...later...

I just read the piece on MountEverest.Net - I'm impressed.

I also read the stuff on MSNBC.

I'm waiting for the book now!

Hi Carrie,
That's great news! MSN has a big piece on EV. He was in the middle of his quest in '96 so it has been a long hall. I remember that his K2 summit was with Scott Fischer in '92- I think he said it was his scariest day in the mountains. And coming down he and Scott had to help Rob Hall with his stricken partner who died of HAPE a few months later. And Chantal Manduit needed help on the way down as well. So many ties to the people and events we have discussed here. Gosh, what does he do for an encore? Maybe just take it easy and enjoy life with his family.

Best regards,
Rose

EV made it!! Last I heard this morning he had summitted Annapurna and was on his way down. Congratulations!

okay, I've taken magoo's and BBob's computer advice and I'll be working on Bruce's lifestyle suggestion. tanks a million! Let's see, what else do I need help with that I can solve with a few clicks of a mouse or by laying around the house?

I'm waiting to hear any news of EV - I see that the weather may not be decent until today or maybe Friday. Who knows if he can hold out. Ha - today's dispatch says he is prepared to wait some days if necessary.

Carrie - I know enough to say that doing something strenuous for one day is not so bad but doing something day after day (even if it is not so strenuous) takes mental toughness. Good luck and it will be fun to hear your report.

Tim, have you considered deleting everything and rewritting over everything? In other words, delete everything you don't want, run scandisk and your disk cleanup program to make files contiguous and consolidate your directories, then create a dummy file - say a word file with a repeated sentence - copy the text over and over to get a large file - then make a copy of the file on the disk until you have 10 copies - then select those 10 copies and make 10 more copies until you have 100 - then select 100 and keep copying until you fill up your disks with copies of that file. Then reformat your disks. You cannot recover a deleted file if someone has written other data over the original file sectors.

Magoo, yes I know that there are things I can do about my Mac... like push it off my desk and demand a PC!

I am running OSX, and it is nice to know that you are a member of the Mac cult. :-)

Tim, your shoulder sounds more serious than I thought so I will revise my suggestion. It should now read; Sit down, pour a drink, throw on your slippers and age gracefully. :-) Sounds to me like you've got a date with the scope.

Carrie, spoke quickly with the Bowron info people and asked about wheels...they answered, "HA HA HA WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' WHEELS! Jus' wha' sorta nancy-boys are these friends of yours?"

Umm, I'll try to get a bit more out of them...

Bruce: Your Mac should not be crashing all the time. Are you still on OS9 ;-). OSX on a G3? If you have a G4 or G5 and it's crashing all the time, there are things you can do. ;-)

Tim: I'd go ahead if I were you - PowerBook G4 with Airport. Regarding the potential securitiy problem in Tiger - it can be fixed with a check mark in Safari, also you don't have to get Tiger right now - OSX 10.3.9 is stable and does not have the potential security problem. Go for it! I'm using Tiger and love it. Have not had any problems at all.

Bruce, I'm taking rx-strength Naproxen right now. But the idea of any type of pushups right now is, for me, funny-not-too-ha-ha. Will try to avoid the cutters but may have to end up getting it scoped. Maybe in six months I'll be knocking out some of those pushups.

Good to see the recent posts--I better post now because my computer is on its last legs--I'd say it was on life-support but it's a Dell and "support" isn't a word I associate with them. Just paid them $10.75 for a label to recycle this thing. Speaking of which, I might need some help/tips from the resident experts on wiping the hard-drive clean on this one before I send it off.

I was set on getting a Mac but don't know if I can justify the cost, and news that the hackers are now taking them on undercuts part of my motivation.

Hi All - EV is attempting the summit of Annapurna today, I wish him luck and a safe return.

BBob - Some have done the Bowron circuit in 4 days but we are planning 8 days and 7 nights. Most of the trip reports we have read are about that long. It is a 76 or so mile circuit so that is an average of 10 miles per day, not too strenuous!! We want enough time to enjoy the scenery.

PBob - I am happy to hear you know someone who is pleased with their Perception. Mark built a shed so mine is stored out of the sunlight and the weather so I expect it will last me as long as I care to paddle it.

Bruce - We are doing some type of trip research and preparation every day now so any inside info your friends have would be much appreciated. Our current dilemma is what kind of wheels to buy. Everyone we have spoken to has done the circuit in a canoe and we'd really like to hear from someone who has done it in kayaks, and what type of wheels they used for the portages. We have to take into account about a 120 pound load and a trail of rocks, mud, ruts, etc. It certainly wouldn't do to get half way around and have a set of wheels break! We seem to be good on maps and packing lists, as a friend of mine loaned us a few CDs about the trip. I hope you enjoy your trip and would love to hear about it when you return.

Geez, I'm in again.

Firstly on the Mac issue; I am forced to use one at work. The designers all rave in a beatific, Jonestown way about Macs, and their constant freeze-ups being just a personality flaw of the fine boxes. I personally have destroyed two by throwing them off my desk - I make it look like an accident.

As for Everest - yawn. Same gimmicks, same stories, too many goofballs having burned the media with expeditions in the past and a population that has moved on to other things like...

Sea kayaking! Thank Gawd, you people have finally discovered a real hairy-chested, manly-man sport. :-)

I'm heading for a week of paddling to the Broken Group Islands in Barkley Sound off Vancouver Island next week. Pretty cool trip actually, as the tour company (www.batstar.com you can read about the area there too) is working with the local native band to run tours to islands that have been off limits to paddlers till now. Lots of ancient sites to check out, stories to share etc.

Could our next SJC summit possibly be a paddlefest?

Carrie - know some folks who have done the Bowron circuit, I'll try to track them down and get some beta for ya.

PBob - GET WRITING!!!!!

Tim - Sorry i haven't emailed you yet. One of the best shoulder exercises I've found is to do push ups with one hand on the floor and the other on a soccer or similarly sized ball. Once you get the hang of that, do the push ups but now place your feet on a swiss ball.

Besides that LOAD UP ON THE ANAPROX before they take it off the market too.

Hi to everyone else!

Thanks Rose - I had no idea about EV - that is very interesting - I guess we will see what happens in the next day or two.

Hi BBob and everyone,
Mteverest.net (link on the right of the page) seems to be the best source of news on Everest. I have been away and have not had a chance to catch up. Apparently someone tried to land on the summit with a helicopter, though. My, how the hardware has changed in the nine years since '96. I guess we are just about at the anniversery of the fatal storm that brought us all together.

Apparently EV is on his summit attempt of Annapurna even as I am typing this. This is being followed on Mteverest.net. I thought he had two more summits to go but they are saying that Annapurna is the only one left - did he go back and redo Shishipangma or just accepting what he did before? I don't recall.

I haven't had a chance to check ENews in a while. They are still on some sort of search for evidence that M&I got above the 2nd Step. Things seem quiet on the M&I issue.

Best regards,
Rose

Wups...That's what I get for not refreshing this page. Didn't mean to be redundant.

Magoo....So I've heard. In fact, I can't think of anyone who has ever complained about a Mac. Maybe in my next life...

PBob: there's a few out there right now that are a little disappointed - mainly because their upgrade to Tiger (OSX 10.4) didn't go the way they expected.

Avalanche on Everest! There was a time when we would have been all over that!

Check the links to the right for details.

True...I've never met anyone that was disappointed with their Mac.

Where's the best place right now to find out what's happening on E? I wish Rose would give us a summary.

PBob - Ha, I see. Glad to hear you got together with Jay - I remeber he mentioned it in one of his E-mails.
