Hi Dave,
Wecome back!. I still find it unusual that someone who is obviously using his summit to promote himself - gets to the summit and his photo equipment fails - doesn't ask one of his teammates/Sherpas (was he paying them?) to take his photo for his website? Sounds like very bad relationships with colleagues or .... I'm generally willing to give people the benefit of the doubt but this one doesn't hang together for me . :-)
Best regards,
Rose

Ditto PBob.
Some say that we have about a ten year window to make changes in the way human impact the environment.
Not much time when you think that we are still waiting for Kyoto and those parameters aren't near where we need to be.
I will let you know when our research paper is published.
Pray for those in need here and around the world.
Have a good holiday and get ready for the winter...
Cheers

Hi there , long time no post
here' s my take on the TCCD debate. When i posted on SJC some idle chat from Kathmandu that TCCD did not summit a few years back, some lurker reported it back to him and TCCD immediately sent me an irate email demanding who it was I heard the tale from. I then contacted Liz Hawley, the Himalayan historian who said theTCCD's summit was 'disputed'.
Here's my take, despite lack of collaboration from independent sources.
Byron did summit, but totally hashed the video and snapshots somehow ( it was a good day i think and many others summitted, so think it unlikely that TCCD could not do so ). Sherpas, though paid by him, would have few reasons to ' lie' about him summitting,
Much as I dislike making character comments, i still have a problem about people promoting themselves without proper credit or attribution, or self-declared descriptions of being world-class climbers when the facts do not support such claims. I also find it appalling to have NDAs imposed on your fellow teammates - I mean this is a team - effort, no? .I object to self-centred individuals who have climbed Everest with very little actual team-mindset, and then later go about talkingabout ' leadership' and ' teamwork'
The video: Sure, he paid for it. I dunno if the license to use includes allows TCCD to pass himself off as the Danish climber though. GM of EN thinks the hoo-ha is all b**s**t.
I think it remains for individuals to decide if it is ethical to pass off footage of someone reaching the summit as yourself without having some caption which says things like " re-enactment" or " footage of WHAT IT IS LIKE TO REACH THE TOP ". As you can see, such 'qualifiers' are unelegant, and must have been so tempting to simply just use the footage as it was used.
right, off my soapbox

"Nawlins" is beginning to look like a social meltdown. They are in for some tough times down there. When it comes to the fallout from environmental neglect, it looks like another river- besides the Mississippi-will be having its say... Denial. And, if global warming continues unabated, the combination of hurricanes and melting ice caps will, no doubt, be visiting us again.

nothing here like "Nawlins" is getting. I was already tired of the term "perfect storm" (in numerous types of context), so let's fall back to the "mother" of all storms. Looks worse than Camille, and, unless it weakens overnight, could be the worst since they started naming them. Hopefully that will happen [weaken overnight that is, not set records]. There was a hurricane in the Keys in the '30s where the barometer dropped below 900 millibars and this one is close. The eye formation is amazing.
Hi Rose,
Could this paragraph at the end of the Byron Smith article be the crux of the matter?:
Byron Smith claims that he reached the summit at 7 a.m, and came back to Camp 4 around 2,5 hours later. That's a time frame rarely heard of for an amateur climber in conditions that prevented him to shoot one single picture, and turned back skilled climbers like Tim Rippel, a professional mountain guide in Byron's expedition. Only the late ace speed climber Babu Chiri Sherpa and his brother made the summit that day from the south normal route.
Tim: I guess you have to batten down the hatches again? Good Luck!

Funny, Mteverest.net points out that BS had taken all sorts of high tech video equipment with him and the Sherpas took photos of themselves at the summit but no one seems to have a photo of BS at the summit. Sounds pretty unusual. He was able to get a video clip from the Danish climber but not a still from his own Sherpas?
There are a number of ways one could legitimately handle an absence of a summit photo on one's web site when one summits. But to substitute someone else's without attribution is deceptive and when found out your veracity is going to take a hit. Maybe BS made a dumb mistake but with Everest and well documented instances of disputed summits by others, ya gotta know people are not going to give you the benefit of the doubt in this kind of situation. And instead of saying "Yeah, dumb mistake on my part to use that image" he comes out threatening lawsuits and invoking confidentiality agreements. That is not the way to convince anyone that it was an innocent misjudgment. Sounds like his reputation is going to take a big hit even if he did summit. And he only has himself to blame. jmo ;-)
Congratulations to BBob once again!
Best regards,
Rose
