Got ya magoo!
Hey magoo - is that supposed to make my crash go away? :-)
Hope that didn't have anything to do with me. If it did, I apologize.
Dang - my machine keeps crashing. The hexidecimal dump show ascii values for the characters "testing testing testing". What gives?
BTW, Rose is now a member!
Ken,
The Yates post and best climbing post are both interesting but its kind of like discussing what religion is the best. Best Climber? I don't know. If I was on that rope I hope I would have wanted it to be cut so my partner would have a chance.

magoo did that for you Ken
... just for comparison, this IMO, is an example of a really good trailer. (broadband only)
Hi Rose, glad you made it.
Here's a link to the trailer for Touching the Void. I've yet to see the movie, but IMO, this is an example of a really bad trailer -- for what its worth.

Ok, I have this bookmarked so I can post even if the Blogger doesn't consider me a member.;-)

(Sorry, everyone, but magoo and BBob have spent the better part of this afternoon trying to help me get in.

Oops - what an idiot - Ken is there in plain site
Well, Rose is able to accept the invites but she doesn't seem to get on the Member List. Also, Ken is on the list but doesn't seem to have posted yet.
Yes, I read of J Tree in Rock and Ice quite often.

Wow. Here I am! Thanks, BBob and Magoo! I hope this means I will be able to get on next time. It's good to see everyone again. I have been following the Mallory and Irvine story on ENews. Apparently some folks think they have figured out where SI is. After the 2001 IMS Search for SI and the camera, Eric and Jochen (I think) flew to Beijing to interview a Chinese climber who recalled seeing another dead person in the vicinity of where GM was found (but he was facing up, lying in a gully of some sort). There are some folks who seem to have made a career out of analyzing the terrain and have located an area that seems likely to be the site but was not searched by the IMS team. I think this is what ENews is going after. IMS has a team going to the North col led by Jake Norton but there is no mention of plans to search. So I guess we will have to wait and see.
I was wondering if anyone has any information on the film that David Breashears is filming this year about '96? He and Ed Viesturs will be on the South side again this filming. I curious to know what the angle will be.
Otherwise I am very disappointed that we still haven't gotten Touching the Void here. I have heard good things but have not found myself in a town that is showing it. :-)
Anyway, I had to get this all in, just in case I can't get back in. But again, thanks to magoo and BBob for their help in getting me here.
All the best,
Rose

Rose will get here yet!!
Boulder Bob: in Joshua Tree National Park, you can boulder until your little heart's content. We just hope the weather's nice next time.
Hi Ken -- would you like for me to make your URLs clickable? Glad to see you made it.
PBob, if you would like to write a mission statement, you could put it where it says SJC Blog 2004. Let's keep "blog" in it somehow, since technically this is a blog instead of a chat, but hey, SJC was ahead of its time. To be totally accurate this is a joint blog. :-) Est. 1996 (right?)

Hey Ken, Welcome aboard !
Ha! I see Dr. Ken is now a member
I got in contact with Dr. Ken and I have sent him an invitation.
"Illusion of advancement"? I thought using my computer to do stuff made me smarter.

Does this qualify for a late night?
CSTerry - Too much of a luddite for that. It will have to wait in line behind the palm pilot and the cell phone. Besides, I don't think we're all that advanced. What's it been? Sixty years? And here we are - gnawing at the bit to kill one and other, again. (Perhaps the problem is that we die too quickly. If we lingered awhile longer, would so many have to go?)
The ancient Greeks and Romans knew about illusions and designed their temples to compensate for the effects, thereby creating instead, the illusions of plumb and parallel where there actually wasn't any. This technology thing gives us the illusion of advancement, when I doubt that we are anywhere near even. Even. Now that's a noble goal. Stay with the planet. Forget saving it, just stay with it.
Then too, luddites need to stay with brevity or pretty soon we'll be needing a printing press.

PBob, time to upgrade to a cable hook up !
Great to see how many of the old gang have found their way here.
magoo - I'm trying to reach Dr. Ken - and I'm talking with Jay L about signing on
Good pictures magoo - looks like great Bouldering - with some good jamming cracks.
I am trying to reach jean and Rose. I will invite them back once they get in touch.
Hi Boulder Bob.
Rose is trying to get on. And Carrie had a bunch of folks to invite. Let's see how it goes.
PBob. I'm sorry it takes a long time to publish! But do it anyway!

Is it too soon to start planning this summer's reunion???
Is it too soon to start planning this summer's reunion???
Hey Boulder Bob! It takes a bit of time on my dial up to publish anything that's more than a one liner and the preview bit will make us all more self-conscious than we need or care to be. Still, there is a flow to it and that's the most important thing.
It's taking me a bit to get the hang of this. Nothing new there. For a mission statement I thought maybe a more general theme, which mountaineering facilitates, but that isn't limited by, something like the quest for humankind's soul or some other mundane handle. Remember all those discussions on heroism and risk taking and what it means to be alive, or dead for that matter? I always liked the fact that we were about more than the play-by-play, headline chaser sect. There is a meaning to all of this and the shy, retiring demeanor didn't fit. We went after it and managed our own armchair style of risk in trying to come up with the essence of it all.
Great to see everyone!
magoo - In typical everestnews fashion, they are keeping the identities of their climbers secret because "it's not about the climbers, it's about Irvine and the families and respecting their wishes". Seems sensationalistic to me. I, too, am interested in their expedition but I wonder if we'll ever get any real news about it until (not if, since they are so confident) the camera is found.
Now that didn't sound like Carrie the Good, did it?!?!

This seems to work. Thanks for setting this up, Magoo. Nice to see everyone here.
it looks like I made it here
This is rare air indeed and it feels just like being dropped off at base camp, though I don't really know what that feels like. I haven't been following much of anything these days, except the sun as it crosses the sky, and am looking forward to being back in the mainstream, when it comes to the alpine community that I've grown to love. Of course, putting this site on the map of "the mainstream" will take some doing. Any ideas for a mission statement, charter or theme would be a great place to start. What am I saying! Do you realize what a unique opportunity this is - to say anything, at least for the moment, and NOT be off topic!???
Anyway, it's great to be here!
Anyway, it's great to be here!
That's a good question - I'm starting to wonder if this isn't another red herring like the one Enews pulled a few years back to see who might be lifting stories from their site.
re: Sandy Irvine expedition
I was just wondering who are the members of the expedition?
I was just wondering who are the members of the expedition?
The whole search seems a bit sketchy - - I don't know if it's due to the traditionally unbalanced Enews way of doing things or the generally weird vibe around the strategy.
Dave - - Great to see you too - - I visited the MTEverest board a few times and even posted a long time ago but never felt the need to get very involved. Nothing really wrong with the place, just wasn't my scene.

Is anyone keeping up with the hunt for Sandy Irvine over at everestnews.com?
Hello SJCers! Nice to be here.
Magoo - thanks for the J-Tree shots. No big trips from my end recently -- The S.O. and I went back and finished the West Coast Trail last summer and then took the kids for a couple of weeks in Jasper. We're all going to head back to Vancouver Island this summer and try to spot some whales from the beaches. Then in August, I'm supposed to be riding in the Trans Rockis challenge - a 600+ kilometre mountain bike ride over 6 days from Fernie BC to Canmore. I'll get pctures of that one.

In early March we took a trip to southern California (San Diego, Joshua Tree, LA). The Joshua Tree excursion was supposed to be the "recharging" part of the trip, but it turned out to be ridiculous when it started to rain and snow. Here's some photos. (big thanks to the Army Navy store in Twentynine Palms).

Thanks Carrie!
Finally made it here too, hi all!
Hey, magoo, it's worth trying it out to see if we like it. If nothing else, this attempt has gotten some of us in touch again.

Hi Dave,
There will obviously be some kinks to work out - if this format works for all of us.

well , well, so we are back in business. Now how do we let th e rest of the Net know? And why was mteverest.net's huge community forum page unpopular with the SJC denizens?
Welcome to the SJC Blog
