Hi there , long time no post
here' s my take on the TCCD debate. When i posted on SJC some idle chat from Kathmandu that TCCD did not summit a few years back, some lurker reported it back to him and TCCD immediately sent me an irate email demanding who it was I heard the tale from. I then contacted Liz Hawley, the Himalayan historian who said theTCCD's summit was 'disputed'.
Here's my take, despite lack of collaboration from independent sources.
Byron did summit, but totally hashed the video and snapshots somehow ( it was a good day i think and many others summitted, so think it unlikely that TCCD could not do so ). Sherpas, though paid by him, would have few reasons to ' lie' about him summitting,
Much as I dislike making character comments, i still have a problem about people promoting themselves without proper credit or attribution, or self-declared descriptions of being world-class climbers when the facts do not support such claims. I also find it appalling to have NDAs imposed on your fellow teammates - I mean this is a team - effort, no? .I object to self-centred individuals who have climbed Everest with very little actual team-mindset, and then later go about talkingabout ' leadership' and ' teamwork'
The video: Sure, he paid for it. I dunno if the license to use includes allows TCCD to pass himself off as the Danish climber though. GM of EN thinks the hoo-ha is all b**s**t.
I think it remains for individuals to decide if it is ethical to pass off footage of someone reaching the summit as yourself without having some caption which says things like " re-enactment" or " footage of WHAT IT IS LIKE TO REACH THE TOP ". As you can see, such 'qualifiers' are unelegant, and must have been so tempting to simply just use the footage as it was used.
right, off my soapbox
