I had the pleasure of hearing Ed Viesturs speak last week in Seattle at a National Geographic Live lecture. He showed slides and spoke about his quest to climb all fourteen 8000 meter peaks. His photos were fantastic and his lecture was awesome! He was very funny and entertaining as well as being informative (the audience was not climber-centric). During some of his later climbs he partnered with French climber Jean Christophe Lafaille. During his talk Ed informed us that four weeks earlier Jean Christophe Lafaille had gone missing during a solo attempt on Makalu. I had not been following the climbing news so I had not heard of this latest tragedy. After the lecture I was able to greet Ed briefly in person while he signed my copy of his book.
When I came to write this post I was reminded of the first post I ever made on Outside's SJC. It was about a 1996-related lecture that I had heard the night before in Seattle. I had lurked on the site for a long time and was very nervous to make my first post! I can't believe the 10-year anniversary of the tragedy on Everest is so soon. I was reminded so again last night as I watched a portion of "Everest the Death Mountain" on TV. I think it would be great to have an online "reunion" of the SJC gang and see what everyone is up to.
